"There is no neutral ground. All territories are bound."

Manifestos: Architecture for a New Generation’ is an annual collaboration between London Festival of Architecture and the Design Museum, highlighting work by an emerging generation of voices in architecture who are expanding the parameters of what architecture can be, who London is for and what its future holds.

Sumayya Vally is co-founder and Principal at Counterspace. Her design, research and pedagogical practice is committed to finding expression for hybrid identity and contested territory. She is obsessed with Johannesburg as a laboratory for finding new, speculative histories, futures and design languages; and is presently based between Johannesburg and London as the lead designer for the Serpentine Pavilion 2020/20 Plus 1

Sumayya was nominated by Priya Khanchandani, curator, writer and commentator due to join the Design Museum this summer.

"Counterspace have used the opportunity of their commission for the Serpentine Pavilion, behind the railings of Kensington Gardens, to engage with other places inhabited by immigrant and marginalised communities across London, addressing the complex spatial divides in urban life."
