The St Paul’s Plinth Design Competition

The London Festival of Architecture and the Cheapside Business Alliance have announced a design competition to create a new installation on the ‘St Paul’s Plinth’ – an existing frame structure outside St Paul’s tube station. In the heart of the City of London at the entrance to both Cheapside and London’s Culture Mile, this is an opportunity for architects, designers and artists to create work that will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people when it is installed as part of the London Festival of Architecture in June 2019.  

The ‘St Paul’s Plinth’ project follows the success of the St Paul’s Gateway installation, designed by ScottWhitbyStudio and Arup for the festival in 2018. The new competition uses the structure as a basis for new work that can both resonate with the site’s rich heritage and offer a glimpse into the future of the Square Mile.

Entries will be judged by an expert panel comprising:

• Simon McGinn (City property advisory team manager, City of London Corporation)
• Tamsie Thomson (director, London Festival of Architecture)
• Alex Scott-Whitby (director, ScottWhitbyStudio
• Marc Easton (senior structural engineer, Arup)
• India Block (architecture reporter, Dezeen)
• Representative of the Cheapside Business Alliance

The deadline for this one-stage competition is 12:00 noon on  Wednesday 6 March 2019.
