International Perspectives

This year, I’m particularly excited to see a generous helping of international focused events as part of London Festival of Architecture, events which can help us to reasses London in a global context and learn from international examples.

Having had the rare opportunity to visit and work in Almaty last year, I’m very excited to check out ‘City Nomads’ which showcases Kazakh art, fashion, architecture and design, mapping the links between the city of Almaty and its nomadic and soviet past.

At the Barbican, ‘Architecture on Film: Flotel Europa” explores now the Red Cross responded to the 1992 refugee crisis in Copenhagen by converting a huge ship to offer accommodation to displaced asylum seekers from Bosnia and Herzegovina. What can Europe do to respond to the current immigration issues, and what role can London play?

Finally, as a new arrival to London, I’ll be also using LFA2016 as an opportunity to explore engagement within my local area, with ‘Building Community Participation’ and ‘Inventing Communities’ both looking at creating better places and communities in east London, my recently adopted new home!
